Novelty Ties and Job Interviews Don’t Mix
By Jackie Burns
For all the preparations you must make before that big job interview, studies show that over 50% of a person’s perception of you is based on your appearance and that impression is drawn in less than 60 seconds. Geared with those facts, it goes without saying that you must take care when dressing for a one-on-one with a perspective employer. There is the suit and shirt as well as the accompanying accessories, including socks, shoes, belt and necktie. The closer an accessory is to your face, the more noticeable it is. For this reason men’s ties need to be professional and non-distracting. Novelty ties are neither. Novelty neckwear is fine for a party or other casual social functions but not an interview. Wearing them for an interview demonstrates a lack of good judgment, not to mention their tackiness and potential to offend the interviewer. They lack the seriousness and professionalism you wish to reflect when trying to convince an employer that you are best person for a job. Furthermore, novelty neckties are also very distracting. Even the most subtle of novelty themes are a no-no for this situation. While novelty ties are all about sharing your interests with others, there is a section at the very bottom of your resume where you can list your hobbies if you wish. If you are interviewing for a Mickey Mouse job, by all means wear a necktie displaying this popular Disney cartoon character. Otherwise, save it for another time and go with solid or patterned neckwear for that all important meeting.
