Skinny Neckties Will Always be Popular
By Jackie Burns
Skinny ties come and go. I think if I count it right, they’ve been popular three separate times, starting the early 20th century (before and during World War I), making a big mark in the 50’s and 60’s, resurfacing in the 80’s with a retro look and today again. Now just because fashion is fated to repeat itself isn’t reason enough to believe in their perpetual popularity. What happens, though, is that every time the fashion gods reintroduce them, a new generation of men and women try them on. They latch onto the current trend, only to find out that they look really good in them. In fact slender body types and people of shorter stature look better in narrow neckties than in standard width. The older crowd already knows what the younger crowd is quickly learning: that thin ties have a permanent place in one’s wardrobe, whether you decide to only pull them out when they are the trend or choose to wear them wherever and whenever the mood strikes you. The older generation may still have some skinny ties from the last time they were in fashion and that’s a good thing, because today’s designers haven’t borrowed enough from vintage ties. It is a shame that for the most part the skinny ties hanging in retail shops today are slimmer versions of standard ties, offering the usual suspects: solids, stripes, polka dots, paisleys, floral and foulard patterns. Vintage ties are really cool because they are covered with embellishments and designs no longer replicated today. Try these unique accessories for a unique look all your own!
