Three Reasons Why Skinny Neckties Will Always Be Fashionable
By Jackie Burns
Narrow neckties currently share the stage with standard width ties, but for how long? Is it just a fad going over four years strong or are they here to stay? I can unequivocally say that you will always be able to purchase skinny ties, both new and vintage, even when they are no longer donned by models on the runways. Here are three good reasons: Fashion Repeats Itself During the 20th century, thin ties were fashionable three separate occasions – before the World War I, during the 50’s and early 60’s, and again during the 80’s. Twenty years later they are popular again. We have the designers to thank for that. It is hard to say exactly why they were popular during these decades. Part of the reason was to proportionately match the rest of menswear of the time. Suits were tapered; lapels were narrow, as were shirt collars. So followed men’s neckwear. Some Body Types Look Best In Narrow Ties Some people look better in slimmer neckwear. If you are tall and lanky, short and thin boned, you will look better in skinny neckties. It is a matter of proportion. Once you realize this fact, you will naturally gravitate toward clothing and accessories which look good on you. As far as ties are concerned, they don’t have to be severely skinny. Even 3 to 3 ¼ inch wide neckties will work better than say a four inch wide tie. My advice: go with what looks good. For Nostalgia Sake People who were young adults when skinny neckties are the trend will gravitate toward the type of neckwear which was popular when they first started to wear ties. If you do, you might not care what the current trend is. You know what you like and that’s what you stick with.
