What to do in Vegas once you’re broke
By Mike Burns
Traveling to Las Vegas is one of the most exciting things that a person can do in this country. It doesn’t matter if you’re a high roller at the Bellagio or a dollar a hand blackjack player downtown, you always get off the plane or arrive at the city limits with a sense of opportunity and possibility that you can’t get anywhere else. Sometimes, however, the luck runs cold and the pockets get empty or you just need a break from all the flashing lights and clanging machines. Fortunately, Las Vegas is located a short distance from some of the most outstanding scenery in the West. Just 30 minutes west of the strip is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Featuring soaring red and yellow cliffs, this vividly colored landscape is easy to get to and has a short looping road that travels through the area with numerous places to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way. It has become one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the southwest and adventurous climbers can be seen along the rocks right from the roadside. If rock climbing is not your thing then just getting out and hiking one of the many accessible trails makes for a very enjoyable distraction from the hustle and bustle of the strip. While you are there, you can see wild burros and other desert wildlife as well as numerous Indian petroglyphs that may be up to 3000 years old.
